- Favorite Finale – Loved the LOST finale – I do wish that they’d shared a little more about the Island, and the Dharma Group, but I was very satisfied with how it ended none the less. Also, Jimmy Kimmel afterwards was fun – can’t believe Naveen Andrews (Sayid) doesn’t watch the show. Also — for last week’s finales, Bones and Fringe were grand.
- Strangest Duck Sighting - Saw a duck and ducklings crossing a busy street. They were much more duck-sized in real life. Quite incredible.
- Epic-most Tweet - Water is just coffee that hasn’t reached it’s full potential @owlcity – Yes. It. Is.
Kiery: “Why is the water container always empty?”
Alex: “I’m always helping it reach its full potential.” - Most Confusing Popular Opinion – my RSS feeds tell me we’re mad at Facebook. Why are we mad at Facebook? Their privacy controls are great, they haven’t intentionally given non public/anonymous information to advertisers lately, and I don’t care if they want to own my friend associations. Ever used XFN, the micro format for marking up relationships with people? It’s neat for 5 minutes, but then you realize it’s semi-useless. The value of friend relationship data isn’t in the data itself, it’s in what Facebook does with that data, showing you what people you know are doing, and without Facebook or a social networking site like it, that’s very difficult to have. Diaspora does sound nifty. But Facebook ain’t that bad either.
- Most Interesting Food – Mussels – sort of like clams, but they’re like their own little critters in a shell there… pretty tasty though, with some butter @ Lobster Cooker.
- Looked-Forward-To-Ed Most Summer Movies - Splice is coming up, Jonah Hex looks interesting, Inception might be the awesomest, Scott Pilgrim I should look up the date on. A-Team doesn’t look bad either, since they laugh at Mr. T’s hair.
- What I’m Reading – Tommyknockers, by Stephen King. I’ve been meaning to read one of his novels for a long time, and wanted to try out the iBooks store on the iPad. It’s good – I’m only on page 333 out of 1100-ish, but I’m enjoying the style, characters, and story structure so far.
- What I’m Listening To – The Shins, a great band I discovered through @asilannax. Favorite songs include Phantom Limb, Caring is Creepy, and Girl Inform Me (not promises on those youtube links working – that’s what Google is for!)
- What I’m Watching – Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince – in BlueRays! Or will be able to soon hopefully. See Kierstyn bought me the latest HP film in BluRay for my birthday – only problem is, we didn’t have a bluray player (I think we were planning on getting one soon?) Anyway, our $130 Sony BD-cantquitereadthenumberfromthecouch came in the other day, and we can finally watch it. On our standard definition TV (which hopefully will be cleared up sometime this weekend, yay).
- What I’ve Been Up To – working on the iPhone app I mentioned the other day, and moving this blog to its brand new domain.
Also, thinking about photo printers – you know those Kodak machines they have at Walmart? Where you stick in your SD card and they print out your pictures on paper? They should have an iPhone app that lets you print photos right off your phone, using the GPS to figure out which machine you’re standing next to. You don’t even need a screen on the print, just let them use the iPhone interface. Maybe just a, “now serving – John Smith – yes we’re printing out your pictures now” sort of screen. That’d be nifty.
- What I’ve Been Watching – Angel – we’re coming towards the end of the third season. We went looking for Buffy comic books at Borders yesterday, which they had, but they didn’t have the Guild (Felecia Day’s comic book based on her web series about gamers – have you not seen it?), so we decided to order from Amazon.
- What I’ve Been Reading – a great post by my wife, about Battlestar Galactica, no less!
- What I’ve Been Up To – playing FlightControl HD on the iPad – it’s a classic iPhone game, but if you’ve never tried it, and have a few days to loose via addiction to a game, it’s worth the $5. Also, working through Left for Dead.
- What I’ve Been Listening To – Armistice by MuteMath – such a great band.
- What I’ve Been Thinking About – absolute truth, mostly. I believe it exists, but sometimes, I think people think that means they can know it all. I used to think you just try your best to know the truth, and then believe that was absolute. But it’s arrogant to think that just because the Bible is truth, and we read it, that theres no way we can be wrong about doctrines. I think if people realized that, the fact that they’re probably wrong about a lot, then there’d be a lot less fighting in the church.
It seems like sitting down occasionally and making a list of interesting things to post is a good format for this blog – mostly because otherwise there are no posts, and doing something on a weekly basis is still pushing it.
- What I’m Watching – I’ve started watching Prison Break – when I first realized TV existed I gave the 4th season a try, since that was the only thing on Hulu. I was confused. It appeared on Netflix last week – the first season this time – and it turns out it’s pretty interesting. No idea if it’ll stay that way, but here’s hoping.I’ve also started watching Battlestar Galactica, mostly because of how great Caprica is, and it’s just incredible. I really can’t believe I put off watching it this long. Even Kierstyn likes it. Also gives us some laughs when we watch 24 and see Katee Sackhoff (ha! look! she’s in a different show!)
- What I’m Reading – speaking of Battlestar Galactica, Jane Espenson, a really cool screenwriter/co-producer who worked on Buffy, Firefly, BSG, and now Caprica – seems to be posting on JaneEspenson.com again! The archive of her blog is a treasure chest full of screenwriting tips, and I never knew about the blog back when she was posting, so it’s pretty neat. Plus, updates on lunch.
- What I’m Listening To – the rain at the moment. Kierstyn wanted to go out and get a Frappachino today, so we walked to Starbucks, in the warm, warm sun, got our tasty frozen coffee, and we just beat the rain back to the apartment. But it was still yummy.
- What I’ve Been Up To – thinking about how Twitter has become so successful, but I don’t visit their site more than once a week – I’ve got Tweetie on my desktop, and I really don’t like the website. I definitely wouldn’t use Twitter the way I do without the desktop client. The interesting thing is, if the website didn’t exist, and everyone had to have the desktop client to use Twitter, I probably wouldn’t use Twitter much at all. It’s usefulness comes from the fact that anyone, whether they have a Mac or not, or even have a computer or not (mobile internets!), can use Twitter. Nearly everyone has the web, so it’s a great place for these services to start, and then branch out to higher quality native versions. Progressive enhancement!
So hopefully some people will find this interesting – I know blogging is a dying medium, but I’m a bit old fashioned?
I haven’t written anything here in quite a while, so I thought I’d pop my head into my own blog and make a few updates.
- What I’m Watching – Caprica, Breaking Bad, Modern Family, LOST, Better Off Ted, Bones, House, and Fringe
- What I’m Reading – Daring Fireball (Apple News), Cultural Learnings (great TV reviews, and so funny!), John August (Screenwriting)
- What I’m Listening To – TheSixtyOne (great way to discover new music), Jonathan Coulton, David Dunn, Darwin Deez, Van Rissegnhem, and Beautiful Small Machines (Robots in Love!)
- What I’ve Been Up To – websites (two interesting concept projects, not quite ready for public yet), writing (trying to work on a pilot), and even some drawing with my wacom tablet. Oh, and I’m helping on a local short film.
- What’s Changed? – since I’ve last posted, I’ve gotten married (to Kierstyn King), changed some political views (I’m more pro-immigration, and less conservative), and moved to Freeport, Maine.
Who knows, maybe I’ll post something here sometime – I’d recommend subscribing to the RSS feed. You can also follow me on twitter @alexnking, or Facebook. Thanks for reading.
